1. 'Your Song' (Ewan McGregor), Moulin Rouge. I feel I should write something to justify this as my first choice. I know Moulin Rouge is a film not to everyone's tastes but I love it a lot personally, even though I admit there are TONS, and I mean TONS of flaws to it. And to be honest I don't like all the songs that much but I love, love, love four of them. 'Come What May'. 'Roxanne'. The Medley. And of course 'Your Song' which is just the best film song ever. McGregor might not be a 'perfect' singer with a 'perfect' voice so I'm told by some music aficionados, but he instills such fervour and passion into his singing that it doesn't matter.
2. 'Shoals of Herring' (Oscar Isaac), Inside Llewlyn Davis (I limited it to one song per film because otherwise Inside Llewlyn Davis would probably fit in like half of the top 10 spots)
3. 'Danke Schoen' (Wayne Newton) and 'Twist and Shout' (The Beatles), Ferris Bueller's Day Off
5. 'In Dreams' (Roy Oribson), Blue Velvet
6. 'Save Me' (Aimee Mann), Magnolia
8. 'Bright Eyes' (Art Garfunkel), Watership Down (it's excellently implemented into the film but I thought I'd share the song in it's entirety since it encompasses the film's themes so well)
9. 'I'll Make a Man Out of You', Mulan
10. 'Scarborough Fair' (Simon & Garfunkel), The Graduate (hate to put Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel down so low here)
11. 'Stuck in the Middle with You' (Stealers Wheel), Reservoir Dogs
12.'Across 110th Street' (Bobby Womack), Jackie Brown13. 'What is a Youth' (Glen Weston), Romeo and Juliet
14. 'Gondola no Uta', Ikiru
15. 'Something There' (Paige O'Hara, Jerry Orbach, David Ogden Stiers, Angela Lansbury, Robby Benson), Beauty and the Beast (though tempted to put Tale as Old as Time in its place)
16. 'Dance Magic Dance' (David Bowie), Labrinyth
18. 'Cant Take My Eyes Off of You' (Heath Ledger, and the Frankie Valli version is my all-time favourite song), 10 Things I Hate About You
19. 'Where is My Mind' (The Pixies), Fight Club
20. No idea yet...need to make my decision at a later point.
Hon. Mention: 'Never Had' (Oscar Isaac), 10 Years (by far the worst film here, in fact i'll say don't bother with the film just watch and listen to the song, but that's why it's not on the list)
What do you think of Kidman in Moulin Rouge? She doesn't seem to be particularly loved by bloggers in it but I think she's actually terrific in it. She is completely committed to the role, she sounds lovely, she is both entertaining and heartbreaking, she has a lot of star-power that reminds me of Greta Garbo in Camille and she has a phenomenal chemistry with McGregor (who is as usual great and he has a beautiful, passionate voice). I'd give both 4.5s bordering on 5s.
ReplyDeleteI think she is very good especially in her big dramatic scenes, obviously Mcgregor is for me the standout but they're both 5's for me.
